History of the Cornelius & Anna Houtelin Home

1863 Battle of Gettysburg brought cavalry and artillery action to the property. Kilpatrick's Brigade with Wesley Merritt and Farnsworth fighting on the South Cavalry Battlefield.

1950's The Battlefield Bed & Breakfast also has an Eisenhower connection. President Eisenhower often visited his friend George Allen, who lived next door. The President would walk down the lane, enjoying the peaceful setting of the Civil War farm - and visiting the outhouse. This was the country, after all! Eventually, Ike and Mamie Eisenhower bought a farm across the street, which is now the Eisenhower Historic Site encompassing the original Eisenhower Farm and two adjoining farms that Eisenhower later bought to expand his black angus herd.

1971 The original farmhouse was modernized and expanded. The outhouse that Eisenhower used to visit was replaced with modern plumbing.

1993 The home was further expanded to accommodate an historic Civil War theme bed and breakfast.

2001 Founding site for the Unitarian Universalists of Gettysburg, following a strong tradition associating the history of Gettysburg and the history of Unitarian Universalism.

2009 Bicentennial celebration of the Cornelius Houtelin home coincides with President Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday.

What We Are Not

We are not a living history farm with complete immersion in the time period.  Our specialty is comfort and convenience with a Civil War theme.  For you city folks, this is a home away from home--a visit to Grandma's with a little romance on the side and a taste of the Gettysburg adventure.  For you country folks, it is a comfortable visit with a favorite country aunt away from the noise and traffic of downtown--and yet, just 5 minutes from your favorite restaurants, galleries,  antique shops, and boutiques.

Gettysburg National Military Park

The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory in the summer of 1863 that ended General Robert E. Lee's second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Confederacy", it was the war's bloodiest battle with 51,000 casualties. It also provided President Abraham Lincoln with the setting for his most famous address.

The Gettysburg Address  Library of Congress

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met here on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of it as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But in a larger sense we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled, here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they have, thus far, so nobly carried on. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

given by a costumed reenactor.

You won't want to miss the daily hands-on
Civil War history programs at 8 A.M.

You may try on uniform jackets and hats.
You may even get to fire a black powder musket.
You will have a variety of presenters
who tell different stories
each morning of your stay.

You will look forward to our delicious full hot breakfasts

Then dig into a delicious breakfast entrée with farm potatoes, breakfast meat, orange juice, and coffee. You won't go away hungry! We often wear costumes when we serve breakfast. We have some wonderful men and women's hats that we invite you to wear if you want.

Friday night ghost stories

Have an early dinner so you can be back by 8 PM for our ghost story time. The lights are lowered, the candles lit, and the spirits are invited in for the evening. The next morning, we gather around the breakfast table and share stories about our night. Will Cornelius Houtelin or the Lady in Blue visit your room that night? Remember, it's all storytelling....isn't it?

You can stay in the only bed and breakfast
in an original 1809 Lincoln era Civil War home
on the South Cavalry Battlefield

You will be staying in an exclusive, privately owned section of the South Cavalry Battlefield in Gettysburg, PA. The monument beside the driveway wasn't even known to the Gettysburg National Military Park until we told them about it. Cornelius and Anna Houtelin owned this historic farm during the Battle of Gettysburg. Artillery, cavalry, and infantry all fought here on the property. You can walk the paths where the Union Cavalry fought and camped. You've always wanted to visit Gettysburg, or you have discovered Gettysburg and can't wait to get back. Imagine you and your favorite people staying in an original Pennsylvania farmhouse on the Gettysburg Battlefield.

You will love our beautiful country setting

You can hike on 30 acres with a lotus pond, an ancient oak grove, and nature trails. We are set back ¼ mile from the main road. Traffic noise is unheard of. The rooster crowing, the peeper frogs, and the braying of the donkey are the sounds that will waken you in the morning.  Our 1820's barn is a great place for a reception or barn dance. Our lawn is the perfect setting for a garden wedding or commitment ceremony.

We welcome you, your family, and your pet dog

We welcome all guests - singles, couples, families, and friends of all ages. We even welcome your family dogs. We trust you to know if your pets and children will be good bed and breakfast guests. We have plenty of room outdoors for everyone to run off extra energy. We have a great tree swing and a small petting zoo.

Let us know what you want and we will do our best to make it happen. This is your home while you are our guests.

Excellent location within five minutes of the National Park Visitor Center, restaurants, galleries, museums, and outlet shopping.

The National Park is our northern neighbor. We are located on an exclusive private section of the Battlefield  behind Big Round Top on the same road as the National Park Visitor Center, Pickett's Charge, and the Peach Orchard.
